Building Your Paranormal Romance TBR: A Guide for New Shifter Fans

So you’ve discovered shifter romance and you’re ready to dive headfirst into this addictive world of supernatural love stories. Welcome to the pack! But with thousands of paranormal romance books available, where do you start? Let me guide you through building a TBR (to-be-read) list that will give you the best possible introduction to this amazing genre.

Start with the classics that established many of the tropes we love today. Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series is excellent for urban fantasy with strong world-building. Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series offers complex mate bonds and fascinating supernatural societies. These series will give you the foundation to understand references and tropes you’ll encounter in newer books.

Next, decide what kind of shifter appeals to you most. Wolf shifters are the most common and offer the richest exploration of pack dynamics—perfect if you love found family themes and alpha heroes. Big cat shifters (lions, tigers, leopards) often feature more solitary characters and intense, passionate relationships. Dragon shifters bring magic, power, and often complex political intrigue.

Don’t overlook less common shifters! Bear shifters often feature protective heroes and cozy, domestic storylines. Raven or hawk shifters might involve prophecy and mystery elements. Even more unusual animals can make for fascinating reading—I’ve seen everything from elephant shifters to honey badger shifters, each bringing unique cultural and behavioral elements to their stories.

Consider your heat preference early. Paranormal romance ranges from sweet and steamy to absolutely scorching. If you’re new to the genre, you might want to start with moderate heat levels and work your way up (or down) based on your preferences. Most book descriptions will give you hints about heat levels.

Pay attention to world-building complexity. Some paranormal romance focuses primarily on the relationship with minimal supernatural politics. Others feature intricate magical systems, complex supernatural societies, and political intrigue that rivals epic fantasy. Both are wonderful, but knowing which you prefer will help you choose books you’ll enjoy.

My own Birth series and Dragon Master books are designed to be accessible entry points while offering deeper complexity for readers who want to dive into world-building details. The La Patron series explores pack dynamics and family loyalty, while the Dragon Master books feature complex magical systems and unique supernatural politics.

Look for series rather than standalone novels when you’re starting out. Series allow you to really sink into a world and get attached to secondary characters who often get their own books later. There’s nothing quite like the joy of seeing a beloved side character finally get their happily ever after.

Don’t be afraid to DNF (did not finish) books that aren’t working for you. With so many amazing options available, there’s no reason to struggle through a book that doesn’t grab you. Trust your instincts—if you’re not enjoying the writing style, characters, or plot by the 20% mark, move on to something else.

Join online communities! Goodreads groups, Facebook communities, and Reddit forums are treasure troves of recommendations. Readers in these communities are passionate about sharing their favorites and helping newcomers find books they’ll love.

Finally, keep an open mind. Paranormal romance is incredibly diverse, with subgenres ranging from contemporary urban fantasy to historical paranormal to post-apocalyptic supernatural stories. What doesn’t appeal to you in theory might surprise you in practice.

Remember, building the perfect TBR is a journey, not a destination. Your tastes will evolve as you read more, and that’s part of the fun!
